Paul Petzoldt climbed the Grand for his first time at 16. Following that near-fatal experience, he became a world-class mountaineer and pioneer of the conservation movement, eventually establishing the National Outdoor Leadership School in 1965 to school others in wilderness stewardship and backcountry safety.
